Contribution of Jamshedji Tata to the Tata Group


Jamshed ji, a visionary and pioneer of Indian industry, was born on March 3, 1839 in Navsari. He is called the father of Indian industry. He completed his education from Elphinstone College. He started a trading firm in 1868 with a capital of 21000. Under which the supply of military equipment was started in foreign countries. In 1869, he bought an old oil mill in Bombay and converted it into the Alexandra Cotton Mill.

        In no time, it became a running mill. Which was sold after 2 years with a profit. Started The Central India Spinning and Weaving Manufacturing Company in 1874 with a capital of 15 lakhs. Inspired by his success, he bought a sick mill in 1886. Which was named Swadeshi Cotton Mill.

  Jamshed ji's dream of steel manufacturing was fulfilled then. When his son Dorabji and cousin R. D Tata established the Tata Iron and Steel Company in the year 1907 at Kuwai. Jamshedji built the Hotel Taj Mahal in Mumbai. This hotel was equipped with all the amenities according to the European standards of that time. On 7 January 1865, the Indian Post and Telegraph Department issued a postage stamp in honor of Jamsetji.

Early Life of Ratan Tata

Ratan Naval Tata was born on 28 December 1937 in Surat, Bombay Presidency, British India, into the affluent and famous Tata family. He is the son of Sunu Kamsirayit and Naval Hormusji Tata. His childhood was a bit unfortunate. In the year 1948, his parents got divorced. Then his age was only 10 years. After this divorce, his father Naval Tata married a woman named Simone Dunoyer. From this second marriage, his father had another son named Noel Tata.

  At this young age, the divorce of his parents was a big blow for him. He was very mentally broken. So Ratan and his half-brother Noel were brought up by their grandmother Nawajbai. He was very dear to grandmother. Ratanji's grandmother Nawajbai Nawaz and grandfather Sir Ratan Tata were childless. So Nawazbai adopted Naval Hormusji, the son of Hormusji Tata. Hormusji Tata was a spinning master in his own textile mill.

Ratan Tata's early education took place at the Campion School in Mumbai. He then took admission in The Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai. When he was 15 years old. He was then sent to America to complete his further studies. Where he completed his 12th standard from Riverdale Country School in New York. In 1958, he graduated in Architecture and Structural Engineering from Cornell University, USA. After this, he did the Advanced Management Program course from Harvard Business School.

  Ratan Tata was an intelligent student in his school. During the same time, he got a job offer from IBM. But Ratan Tata rejected that job. He never took advantage of his name. You would be surprised to know. During college time, he also did work like cleaning utensils for money. He used to believe that I would reach any stage in my life on the basis of my hard work.

Eventually, in an interview, he disclosed this. In this, he told that after getting an architecture degree from Cornell University. He started working a job in the city of Los Angeles.

       For this job, he spent 2 years there. Then he fell in love with a girl living there. He still considers those two years as the best time of his life. They both loved each other very much. Both of them had made up their mind to get married. But then something happened. Which ended their relationship forever.

       At the same time, the news of his grandmother's ill health reached Ratan Tata. Due to excessive attachment to his grandmother and not meeting her for 7 years. He came back to India. He also asked that woman to go to India with him. He said that he would go to India and get married. That girl was ready. But his parents did not give him permission to go.

        This thing was of the year 1962. When the war between India and China was going on. Because of this war, the parents of that girl refused to let them go. So, the woman made a promise. As soon as the war is over, she will come to India with him. With this belief, Ratan Tata returned to his grandmother. He came to India and started waiting for that woman. He was sure that she would definitely come to him. His wait went on for a long time. Eventually, he got the news. The parents of that woman got her married to someone else.

   Hearing this news, he was deeply shocked. His heart broke completely. Because he had truly loved that woman. He had also promised this. that he would marry her. But marrying that woman to someone else. For Ratan Tata, it became a reason not to marry for the rest of his life. This proves the point. That how firm Ratan Tata is in his promises and principles. Ratan Tata - Tata Group Career

According to the tradition of the Tata Group and his family, till 1970 he continued to work in different companies of the Tata Group. Because his grandfather believed. He took the Tata company to the international level. Along with this, we kept expanding our company in India and foreign countries. Tata Group was already manufacturing Passenger and Commercial Vehicles. But to fulfill the car dream of common Indian. Ratan Tata launched the Indica, a fully made in India car, on 30 December 1998. This was the dream project of Ratan Tata. To accomplish this, Ratan Tata worked very hard. But Auto Analyst, completely criticized this car.

Then Bill Fort, chairman of Ford Company, had a rude behavior with Ratan Tata.

      In small talk, Bill Fort told Ratan Tata that if you did not know how to make a car. So why did you invest so much money in this business? We are doing you a favor by buying this company. This thing touched Ratan Tata's heart. He left the deal overnight and came back. He was feeling humiliated about this. Now he had to answer with his success.

     Ratan Tata came back and turned his full attention to Tata Motors. He launched the new version of Indica, Indica-2. Within a few years, after suffering initial setbacks, Ratan Tata's car business started to take off. Which proved to be a very profitable business. Within a few years, the Ford company was running at a loss, thanks to its Jaguar and Land Rover. By 2008, it was on the verge of bankruptcy.

       At that time Ratan Tata offered to buy his luxury car Jaguar and Land Rover. Which Bill Fort happily accepted. Bill Fort likewise arrived at the Tata Group headquarters with his partners.
